The D603 departmental road, located between Sainte-Aulde and Montreuil-aux-Lions, was the scene of a tragic event. On Sunday, March 8, 2026, a road accident in Seine-et-Marne, which resulted in the deaths of three young people, occurred around 3:45 a.m. The driver, aged 19, reportedly lost control of his vehicle before crashing into a tree.
“Excessive speed and the use of nitrous oxide appear to be the causes of the accident ,” Meaux public prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier told AFP, adding that the young driver “had a balloon in his mouth and a nitrous oxide canister between his feet.” He had obtained his driver’s license only a month and a half earlier. According to a source cited by TF1 Info , “the engine block was found almost in the middle of the vehicle,” where “balloons and nitrous oxide canisters were also found.” The prosecutor specified that the accident occurred on a straight stretch of road in “very poor visibility due to fog.”
The fourth passenger was evacuated “in absolute emergency”
When emergency services arrived at the scene, a few minutes after the accident, only one vehicle had crashed into the plane tree, with four people inside, three of whom were already deceased. The fourth passenger, a young man born in 2000, was seriously injured and transported in critical condition to the Henri-Mondor Hospital in Créteil. A total of 23 firefighters were involved in the operation. An investigation has been opened and entrusted to the La Ferté-sous-Jouarre territorial brigade.
A report published on January 28, 2026, by the French National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory reveals that 3,513 people died on the roads of metropolitan and overseas France in 2025. This represents a 2.4% increase compared to 2024. Among the causes of this rise in road fatalities is nitrous oxide, which is inhaled for its euphoric effects via balloons. In addition to its devastating health effects, its use while driving is extremely dangerous.
