When the police arrived at the home of a young couple in Campestre-et-Luc, a village of fewer than 200 inhabitants located near Le Vigan, in the Gard, they discovered a one-year-old child in a deplorable state.

Firefighters were already on the scene. The situation was dire: the child had swallowed a ball of cannabis left on the young couple’s living room table.

Fortunately, the baby was quickly airlifted to the pediatric emergency room. Doctors took charge of the situation and were able to save him in the shortest possible time.
© PixabayIt turned out that the couple, in addition to using the drug, had about twenty cannabis plants, resin, and jars of dried marijuana in their home. Furthermore, investigators later learned that the child was under a social protection order. The parents were tried for several offenses related to endangering others, as well as the production and use of narcotics.
© PixabayFive years earlier, also in the Gard region, a little girl, also one year old, had swallowed a ball of cannabis. This time, the unfortunate incident occurred in the town of Bagnols-sur-Cèze. The child was hospitalized, suffering from vomiting and sleeping while standing.
© ShutterstockThe parents were convicted by the criminal court: the father received a €1,000 suspended fine and the mother a €700 suspended fine. According to Midi Libre , the meatball reportedly fell from the father’s pocket and the child put it in his mouth after finding it on the ground.
© PixabayFollowing tests performed on the little girl, doctors detected a level of THC in her system. As a reminder, tetrahydrocannabinol is the main active molecule in cannabis. It is what produces the euphoric state. THC can remain in the body for several days. The mother was granted custody of the child through a supervised placement procedure.
© ShutterstockOnce again, these stories serve as a stark reminder of how catastrophic the dangers of drugs can be. Two one-year-old babies could have died due to their parents’ negligence. Using cannabis or other illicit substances harms not only those who use them, but also those around them. This is proof.
© DRWhether it’s cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine, or any other illicit psychoactive substance, their consumption or possession is a crime punishable by law. The penalty can be up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of €3,750.
